McDaniel’s hilltop campus in Westminster hosts far more than college life: conferences, reunions, weddings, and awards nights move through its mix of historic halls and modern venues year-round. The college publishes a full menu of rentable spaces — from Alumni Hall’s 500-seat theatre with stage and balcony to columned lounges and chapels — all booked through its Conference & Event Services office.
Our documented show here was an alumni awards dinner in one of those historic halls — columns down the room, a balcony above, round tables below. Rooms like that are why lighting is the highest-leverage line in a McDaniel event budget: the architecture is already the decor. Green uplighting on the columns and a single custom gobo thrown on the floor did what draping an entire modern ballroom couldn’t, because the building was doing half the work.
The same architecture that rewards lighting challenges audio. Halls built before amplification are tall and reflective; the difference between crisp award announcements and a wash of echo is speaker placement and gain discipline, not wattage. We size PA to the room’s real acoustics, put speech energy only where the audience is, and keep music under control until the program gives way to the party.
