Some rooms tell you exactly what the audio can’t be. The National Aquarium after hours is one of them: guests moving through exhibit halls full of live animals, where a PA system isn’t a design choice — it’s off the table entirely.
The brief. An evening event across the Aquarium’s exhibit spaces, with music and program audio for guests — and none of it audible in the halls themselves.
The technical challenge. The venue is the audio constraint. Live-animal habitats set the noise rules, the event footprint spans multiple exhibit areas on different levels, and guests flow through the space at their own pace rather than sitting in one room. Conventional reinforcement solves none of that.
How we ran it. Headphone audio — over a hundred LED wireless headsets, staged in rows, charged, and channel-checked before doors. Multiple channels ran simultaneously, and each headset’s ear-cup color showed the channel its wearer picked, so the crowd itself became the visual. Guests grabbed a headset at a distribution table, chose their feed, and carried their audio through the exhibit halls — while the halls stayed as quiet as the animals need them.
It’s the clearest example of a principle that runs through our audio work: the room dictates the system. Sometimes the right PA is several hundred tiny ones.
