A venture panel at the UMD BioPark, run from one road case

The event: an evening venture-community program at the University of Maryland BioPark in Baltimore — a moderated panel of four, a podium for introductions, and a networking hour, in a lecture room that belongs to presentations by day.

The brief. Every voice on stage had to be effortless to hear without the room ever feeling amplified — a panel program, not a concert. The organizers needed introductions from a podium, four panelists in conversation, a moderator moving between them, and zero fuss during transitions.

The technical challenge. Panels are channel-count problems. Four panelists, a moderator, and a podium microphone means six-plus live wireless channels in a downtown RF environment, all open at once during crosstalk-heavy discussion. And a university lecture room is a working space — the production had to load in, run, and disappear without disturbing the building around it.

How we ran it. The whole audio department arrived in one road case: a compact digital console topped with eight channels of Shure QLXD wireless, patched, labeled, and frequency-scanned in the room before doors. The PA ran on stands, tuned to the room’s presentation acoustics. One engineer mixed the program from the side of the room — riding levels through the panel’s back-and-forth so the conversation stayed intelligible without ever peaking hot.

The setup photographed here is the same approach we bring to any panel program: count every voice, add spares, coordinate the RF, and put an engineer — not a volunteer — on the console.
